The Walking Dead Season 5 Recap – Episode 10: Them

THEM

Rick's gang finally cop a break in Episode 10 (entitled Them) in Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

So here’s what went down in Episode 10 (entitled Them) Season 5 of AMC’s The Walking Dead:

This week we find Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) group walking the long walk on their way to Washington or where ever the hell they think they are headed. It is a slow torturous walk too with everyone not being able to find water or food even though Carol (Melissa McBride) managed just fine not that long ago all by herself. Maybe her miraculous coma and leg healing has managed to zap her survival memory?

As well as the stark realities of life on the road with nothing to eat or drink, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) are all suffering at the hands of their losses. Maggie and Daryl because of Beth (Emily Kinney) and Sasha because she has just lost her brother Tyreese (Chad Coleman). So this episode is completely about human suffering.

Which turns out to be quite miserable.

Maggie (Lauren Cohan) finds life hard in Episode 10 (entitled Them) Season 5 of AMC's The Walking Dead

Along with their forgotten survival skills, they also cannot seem to find a running car and are followed by a constant herd of walkers that seem just as delirious as Rick’s group. Gotta love the fact that fast walkers and petrol filled cars present themselves only when needed as exciting plot devices. As well as the main theme, it’s interesting to note Carol manages to kiss Daryl and yet there is still not a whiff of romance between them *sigh* Also, Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) main thing if being tired of the road and is willing to take a risk on anything that smells remotely of a settlement – even though she lived through Woodbury.

We get to dwell in their misery for what feels like way too long in this episode until they manage to find an old barn that is decrepit enough it looks ramshackle yet structurally sound enough for what happens later…

In the midst of all this despair, there is the conclusion that all is totally at the end, nothing can possibly get better. To make matters worse, I’m pretty sure I saw something moving in the woods while talking was happening. Totally think it was nothing until…

…a supply of water turns up in the middle of the road, apparently left by a ‘friend’ and even in the midst of all their suffering, no one is game enough to drink the Kool-Aid. Yeah, looks like New-Slabtown/Terminus/Woodbury has just arrived.

But then it starts raining and everyone is ecstatic and we are reminded to just keep swimming no matter how shitty the circumstances are and the group hang out in the conveniently found barn I mentioned earlier.

So while there, feelings are discussed and Maggie, Sasha and Daryl still look miserable. (Although, not as miserable as what Maggie managed to get in the comics.) Then the walkers turn up, apparently all refreshed by the downpour and Rick must rally his troops with a speech that ends with We are the walking dead – except they so aren’t and they have enough strength to hold that barn door closed and keep the real walking dead out until a miracle intervenes.

The next day – when everything has been washed clean by the cleansing waters sent from heaven – Sasha and Maggie head out and we discover that it seems Mother Nature slew all those walkers with some trees she threw at them (conveniently missing the barn, of course) and the two women realise that they must set aside their grief and move on.

Enter Aaron (Ross Marquand).

Yeah, totally charming and totally the new bad thing…

It was a pretty grim episode to be honest and seemed to crawl along. I almost lost interest in fact and then Mr Goody Two Shoes turns up, finally giving the episode an angle for the next installment.
Yawn…..haven’t seen 11 yet and just hope it picks up. I really used to look forward to TWD and I hope we can get that feeling back again.

Completely agree marc! I was so glad when Aaron showed up. Ep 11 was better than this one by far. Also, AMC have just announced the Season 5 finale will run for 90 minutes – so there’s that to look forward too 🙂
