Game of Thrones Season 4 Recap – Episode 9: The Watchers on the Wall

The Watchers on the Wall

Kit Harrington stars as Jon Snow in HBO's Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 9 (entitled 'The Watchers on the Wall)

What did everyone else think of Episode 9 (entitled The Watchers on the Wall) of HBO’s Game of Thrones Season 4? Personally, I was a bit crapped off with it 😦

Okay, so having Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) finally meet up with Ygritte (Rose Leslie) was pretty cool, but, as for the rest of it, it kinda went like this:

  • Sword fight, sword fight, sword fight.
  • Wow! Look at the giant and it’s pet mammoth!
  • Sword fight.
  • Is this really Game of Thrones or have I accidentally changed the channel and caught the tail end of The Lord of the Rings?
  • Arguing – usually involving Jon Snow and people who are supposed to be more in charge than him
  • Don’t die Samwell (John Bradley)!
  • More bloody sword fighting… except this time it looks more like a scene from the History channel’s Vikings – which is pretty damn cool actually.
  • Woolly-bloody-mammoths – with it’s ARSE on fire! *best scene of the night!*
  • Ygritte! Awesome, it’s Ygritte
  • Oh. NO!

Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie) meet for hte last time in HBO's Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 9 (entitled 'The Watchers on the Wall')

  • Jon Snow, you know nothing.” *bitter tears*
  • Release the hounds!
  • What, are Castle Black ACTUALLY winning this fight?
  • When are we gonna see something other than bloody sword fighting?
  • Oh, look, there’s that wormy guy who chickened out and hid in the kitchen with Gilly (Hannah Murray) – hope he gets strung up next week…
  • Cool! They killed a giant.
  • Phew! The episode is over!

What I really want to know though, considering we are only one episode away from he Season 4 finale, is when the fuck are we going to find out the fate of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)? Please don’t drag it out until Game of Thrones Season 5 HBO!

  1. The battle in the book was really two battles, if I remember, and it went on for a LONG time. I also believe Ygritte died off-screen in the book, too, so no one got to sing, “Shot through the heart!”

The mammoth getting lit up was great. So were the guys getting hit with the pendulum. Really, though, Castle Black is full of fuck-ups, it’s a wonder they could defend themselves against The Hound and Arya.

If things play out as they should, you’ll find out what happens to The Imp Sunday. I only want to know one thing, and it better end with a quick scene right at the end with a certain lady . . .

I can’t believe i missed your comment Cassidy! :-/ I agree about Castle Black being full of fuck ups – they are screwed aren’t they?

      • Now I have to find out what happened last night.

      • mrszoomby says:

I am watching it now 🙂

      • I am disappointed by something that DIDN’T happen at the end. DISAPPOINTED!

      • mrszoomby says:

Yeah, it seems a lot of people were :-/

      • Yes, a couple of things they wanted to have happen that didn’t. But yet, the 3 eyed crow thing, that’s like in another book. So boo.

Also, there’s wasn’t a mention of a certain wife, which sort of threw off someone’s motivation for seeing daddy.

        I’m nitpicking, I suppose.

      • mrszoomby says:

I REALLY need to read the rest of the books! 🙂 Although, I am torn, because there is something extra special about seeing yhe shocks first hand visually 🙂

      • There is, but then they change so much in the show that the books loose context. As great as Peter played the last scenes, his confrontation with Shae was far different in the book.

      • mrszoomby says:

I really wasn’t happy with that scene at all 😦

      • And that should be “lose” context, otherwise the pages are slipping. 🙂

In the book The Imp is looking for answers, trying to find out where his first wife went. He finds Shae in his dad’s bed, and straight-up murders her, then finds dad on the pot. Asks him where his wife went, is told, “Wherever whores go–” WRONG ANSWER! Gets skewered on the spot, and then Imp thinks along the line that was wasn’t true, his dad didn’t shit gold.

Also, when Jamie lets him go, he tells him he did murder Joffery, just to stick the knife in him and twist it.

Now imagine Peter acting that out . . .

      • mrszoomby says:

Yeah, I was disappointed with the fact there was no time for conflict between Tyrion and Jaime. Actually, that was the problem – no time for conflict. Yeah, Tyrion found Shae in bed with his dad, but it juat felt out of character for Tyrion to kill her and his dad without all the extra dialogue.

      • I would have liked to have seen him just off Shae right there–a fit of rage so unlike him. And then when dad throws the whore thing back at him, he loses it. The “Say whore one more time” was too much like, “If you open your mouth once more I’ll slap you”. Tyrion was there for a reason, and not about to hear shit. At least he didn’t ask for chicken. 🙂

      • mrszoomby says:

        LOL! True 😉

      • I just realized: we can start singing the song, “It’s Hard Out There For an Imp.” 😀

      • mrszoomby says:

Ans, no, not nit picking at all. It seems a lot of readers were expecting more 🙂

      • I think EVERYONE expected Zombie Cat at the end. And while the fight between Brienne and The House was great, never happened in the book; he was actually wounded back at the KFC: King’s Fuckin’ Chicken. 😉

      • mrszoomby says:

Lol! You know I prefered that one fight scene over last weeks ENTIRE episode! 🙂

      • I’ve watched that chicken scene about a dozen times. “You gonna die for chicken?” “Someone is . . .” Table FLIP! That was great. That was really where he got hurt and started dying slowly.

And Danny should have taken the kids to see “How to Train Your Dragon.” She might have picked up a few tips.
