The Walking Dead Season 4 Recap – Episode 2: Infected

TWD S04E02

So last week Patrick (Vincent Martella) got infected with a mystery illness and died. This week in AMC’s The Walking Dead, Episode 2 (aptly entitled Infected), the shit has really hit the fan!

Firstly, we find Karen (Melissa Ponzio) a near miss as she says goodnight to her sweetheart, Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman), and goes to freshen up in the bathroom. Talk about AMC doing a good job of flashing back to to good ole days of scary movies – I was on the edge of my seat!

Patrick goes looking for Karen, but finds a tastier meal in one of the other cells. Needless to say, it all goes to hell in a hand basket – but mainly for the survivors of Woodbury. So far we haven’t lost a single person from Rick’s crew.

Mixed in with the infected outburst, we also have to contend with the fact that the masses of zombies outside the fence line are starting to bring them down! In the very first scene of Episode 2 we find out that someone is in fact feeding them rats to keep them close. Since the rats are being pushed through the fence to the zombies outside, it’s a safe assumption that the traitor lies within Old MacPrison’s Farm. Who would be that stupid? And are they even still alive now thanks to the chaos of illness?

Somehow the masses are contained within the prison walls and a meeting commences. It seems a pretty quick conclusion that Patrick was the original source of the outbreak and that it is probably some kind of flu. How awesome are they without the aid of laboratories and forensics?

Carol (Melissa McBride) tries to amputate an arm of a bitten survivor – only to discover he’s also been bitten on the neck. She has a tough decision to make. So she calls in his kids, and low and behold, one of them is the crazy zombie-naming girl Carl argued with in Episode 1! It turns out Lizzie (Kyla Kennedy) has no idea if she is coming or going after he dad dies and she is left with the daunting task of making sure he doesn’t reanimate. Needless to say, I think she and Carl (Chandler Riggs) should get married and become Mr. & Mrs. Messed Up.

While Carl makes crosses and discusses with Carol whether he should tell his dad about story time or not, Daryl (Norman Reedus) gets busy burying the dead. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) joins to help and while I am getting riled up over the sloppy use of mask and gloves, the zombies are working hard to bring down the fence. Before the fence falls and they have to resort to fighting zombies twice in one day, Rick and Daryl grab a truck and some living bacon and head outside to lure the walkers away while the others reinforce the fence.

Rick manages to get covered in a LOT of piggy blood and honestly, I don’t know if he’s loosing it all over again or if he’s starting to come down with swine flu…

So now people are starting to realise that everyone needs to be isolated when they start coughing – Karen is the first, she takes David (Brandon Carroll) down with her. Poor Tyreese.

Now the paranoia starts to settle in – for me anyway. Who are we going to lose? Is Judith just throwing up because she’s a baby, or is she infected too? Daryl had that finger licking incident in Episode 1, is he a goner too?

Then we find out Karen (and I assume, David) are dead. Someone has dragged them from their isolation cells and set fire to them. WTF?

Who do you think torched Karen? And did anyone else notice Michonne (Danai Gurira) around Judith? I think she may have lost a baby at some stage in her life – what do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

  2. When Rick looked to the pen, all I could think of is, “Pigs are made for one thing–eating!” Maybe they should have tried Baa Ram Ewe.

Michonne’s back story is probably going to be shown. In the GN it was stated she was married once and had children, and I don’t think she wants to go to Macon to look for The Governor; she wants to go there because that’s where her ex-moved, and she’s looking for closure because it was Daddy Weekend during the ZA, The look on her face when the comment, “What do you call someone who’s lost a child?” was made opened it up.

  4. I’m really glad that the show is finally giving Michonne some character development beyond badass black chick with a sword. My favorite this season has been Carol though, as she’s a character who has done a full 180 degree turn since the first season. It’s good, I want to feel invested in these people so that their deaths hurt that much more!

I agree (about both Michonne and Carol), although I’m a little surprised to see her reaction to Judith this late in the game, making it feel like a not very well thought out plan from the writers. I can’t wait to see where they take it though because I always thought Michonne was deeper than just cranky bad arse!

As for Carol, she would have to be one of my fave characters, even from Season 1. It’s wonderful to see her grow so much from that of the battered housewife.
