Does this book seem a little familiar to you? Yep, that’s right, I reviewed the first one in this series last year.
So, it’s that dreaded middle child in a trilogy book. Was it terrible? Did it feel like a bridging book to get you from the awesome start in Book 1 to the fantastic end in Book 3? No it did not! In fact, I was REALLY excited at how good this book was, since I usually rack up the Book 2’s to the ‘Jan Brady pile of neediness’. Not this time honey! Heart Search: Found by Carlie M.A. Cullen is just as great as the first book! Not once did I find myself checking the time or finding an excuse to do housework rather than read. Cullen has done what so few can – she’s delivered a second book that is just as interesting as it’s siblings on either side of it.
We start Heart Search: Found right where we left off in Book 1 (Heart Search: Lost), so if you haven’t read that one, then I’ll give you a moment while you head on over to Amazon and pick it up. Thanks to this continuation of story, there is no drag at the start and we are eagerly anticipating what is unfolding. The reader finds themselves involved in the story and each page is turned in rapid anticipation of what is to come next.
You know how I was a little hesitant about the two stories within one book last time round? Well not this time! Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger and then flips to the alternate story line – just LOVE it! I just found I was devouring pages to find out how each story line was moving along. There was no sense of ‘when are they ever going to hook up’ like there was in the first book and for this I am eternally grateful.
Now, for the vampires.
I know there has been a rise in human-friendly vampires of late. Cullen’s vampires do not fall into this category. And yet they do. Just a bit. While they feel no shame or remorse with taking human lives each time they drain one and dispose of them; in Book 2, we are finding a little of the internal battle so common in YA vampires. You see Joshua gets reminded of his past in several different ways thanks to the introduction of someone from his human existence. And this opens up a whole big can of worms. I was completely loving this turn of events.
At times there were places where this novel felt a little over explained. And there was one section (where a decision was being made) that dragged a little, but these things were easily forgotten with the overall fast pace of this novel. So if you want your vampires smouldering hot, yet old-school – then this is the book for you!
Overall, I am giving Heart Search: Found 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can’t WAIT for the next book in this series!

Right then, all I wanted to do was sit and ponder the night’s events, but there were more pressing things to be taken care of. I systematically went from room to room, locking the windows and gathering up all the keys, deliberately keeping my eyes averted from the street whilst at the front of the house – not wanting to see if he was still out there; I was going to have enough trouble sleeping as it was. After draining my wine, I took the empty glasses into the kitchen and loaded them in the dishwasher, double checked the locks on the front and back doors, and only then was I satisfied enough to go to bed.
I hid the window keys before snuggling under the covers and letting my memory replay everything Jakki had said and done. She had been a medium for years and I was more attuned, more comfortable even, with that part of her life than Becky was. Yet this was totally bizarre, even by Jakki’s standards; I’d seen her taken over by spirits temporarily, seen her face change, heard her speak in a completely different voice, but it had never lasted for more than a couple of minutes, five at most. Remembering every detail of the temporary ‘possession’, she was always able to discuss it after the event. Tonight she hadn’t been possessed by a spirit; it was as if she’d been hypnotised, or someone had slipped an illegal substance into her wine (and I knew the latter to be impossible). Plus, Jakki never rambled; even when I’d seen her totally shitfaced to the point where she could barely walk, she was always coherent.
Maybe what worried me the most was her incoherency. The words she used flowed through my head, a river gathering momentum as it ran downhill, yet still none of it really made sense.
A noise sounded from the other end of the hallway. Grabbing my dressing gown, I pulled it on and headed across the landing. I peeked into the nursery; relieved to see the twins sleeping, I carefully closed the door before walking to the guest room. The door was ajar and I popped my head around it, completely unprepared for the sight which greeted me. Jakki was standing in front of the window, with the curtains drawn back and wearing absolutely nothing but a smile.
About the Author
Carlie M A Cullen was born in London. She grew up in Hertfordshire where she first discovered her love of books and writing. She has been an administrator and marketer all her working life and was also a professional teacher of Ballroom and Latin American dancing until recently.
She has always written in some form or another, but Heart Search: Lost is her first novel. This was launched October 2012 through Myrddin Publishing Group and book two, Heart Search: Found, is now available. The final book in this series in underway. She writes mainly in the Fantasy/Paranormal Romance genres for YA, New Adult and Adult.
Carlie is also a professional editor.
Carlie also holds the reins of a writing group called Writebulb. Their first anthology, The Other Way Is Essex, was published September 2012 under Myrddin Publishing Group. Another anthology is due for release July 2013.
Carlie currently lives in Essex, UK with her daughter.
