So this is going to be a pretty short recap. Not because I didn’t like Episode 14, Prey, but because, in a nutshell, it was a tribute to all those scary horror movies we love so much. You know the formula, it goes something like this:
- Girl gets lost in the woods
- Evil psycho stalks her
- She finds a ‘safe’ haven that isn’t safe
- Evil psycho is already there
- He toys with her like a cat does to a mouse
- Girl gets cornered
- Evil psycho nearly gets her
- She escapes just in the knick of time
- Audience thinks the evil psycho has been killed
- Girl escapes
- Girl gets attacked by supposedly dead evil psycho
Yep. That is what happened in this week’s episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead. You just need to insert the name Andrea (Laurie Holden) everywhere I’ve said ‘girl’, ‘she’ or ‘her’. Now replace the term ‘evil psycho’ with the Governor (David Morrissey) and you have episode 14 all wrapped up. And, if you were partial to whistling forget about it – now it just gives you the creeps…
Not that there’s anything wrong with this formula.
It’s tried and tested and had me on the edge of my seat for the entire episode. There were other delicious tidbits too. We got to see Milton (Dallas Roberts) grow a set of balls (which will probably get him killed if Rolling Stone magazine is correct about 27 people dying in the season finale). But, nice work on torching those zombies, man. Not so smart on letting the Gov. know though…
We also discovered just how badly the Tyreese crew want to stay in a ‘safe’ community like Woodbury. When Andrea escapes from the town, they go straight to the Governor and
dob on her let him know. If Andrea dies, her blood will be on their hands!
We also get to see just how sick and twisted the Governor really is. I am thinking that perhaps AMC heeded the words of their fans when the Michonne (Danai Gurira) rape scene was cut from the show (and turned the Gov. into a softer version of evil). It looks like we will still be getting it – except it will be Andrea instead.
The last few weeks of The Walking Dead have been particularly sweet. AMC have been getting underneath the skin of some of the main characters we know and love so much. While I am loving this attention to detail, it also makes me scared. Andrea has not been a crowd favourite, but I dare anyone to claim they feel no sympathy for her after episode 14. And there is not a person alive, watching the show, that doesn’t hate the Governor with a seething passion now.
And this is why I am scared.
When a show makes us love an unlovable character and hate the bad guy even more than we previously did, it usually means that one will die and the other live. And, usually, it’s the baddie that lives…
So, do you think Andrea will make it out of this season alive? Also, I have an interesting theory on why the Governor was limping at the end of Episode 14, so make sure you check out my Governor conspiracy theories here. Oh, and did anyone notice that the car driven to the pit-o-crispy-fried-zombies was the same car the Governor was driving? Except he wasn’t back from his cat and mouse game in the woods with Andrea yet – oops AMC!
Lastly, if you like all the images I use for each recap of The Walking Dead, why not check out the images that don’t make the cut. I save them all to my The Walking Dead Pinterest board.
