The Coat Hanger
Oh, hello Mr John Morgan (and enter the long anticipated entrance of actor Dylan McDermott). It seems he wants to curb his compulsion – really? When the therapist he is seeing assumes he means he is a chronic masturbator, things take a more deadly turn…Just on a side though, is it just me, or is Dylan McDermott just not unbelievable as a cold-hearted killer?
Lana (Sarah Paulson) finally speaks to Sister Eunice (Lily Rabe) who announces that Lana is pregnant. She also lets her know that no matter what happens, Lana WILL be having the baby – can anyone say ‘Evil spawn of Hell’? Lana doesn’t agree with this and once again we find ourselves in the dubious kitchen where she manages to steal a coat hanger *cringe* You know where this is going, don’t you? Lana also later tries to steal a knife, but get caught in the act. When are they going to prevent patients from coming down here?
So Killer Santa (Ian McShane) survived the razor attack and Sister Jude (Jessica Lange) is now committed as a patient to Briarcliff. Killer Santa goes so far as to forgive Sister Jude for the way she treated him, but it doesn’t sit well, as far as I’m concerned! Especially since when the Monsignor (Joseph Fiennes) baptises Killer Santa it all ends in tears – Oops.
Lana wants to kill Dr. Thredson (Zachary Quinto), but Kit (Evan Peters) disagrees – after all he needs his confession as Bloody Face to clear his own name. So Lana confronts Dr. Thredson and tells him she is pregnant to him. He’s is over the moon – until Lana pulls out the cringe-worthy coat hanger and tells him she will abort the baby if he doesn’t spill the beans. When he confesses, she admits she has already gotten rid of the baby AND that Kit has recorded the whole confession!
Speaking of Lana, it looks like she and Sister Jude may form an alliance some time soon. While Lana trusts no one now, Sister Jude is keen to show her that she has changed now that she is trapped in Briarcliff. Somehow, I get the feeling that Lana, Sister Jude and the ever elusive Pepper (Naomi Grossman) will jump in at the last moment and save the day in Episode 12.
So Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) is determined to meet the aliens that stole Grace’s (Lizzie Brochere) body in the last episode. While he sees Kit hiding the tape recording of Dr. Thredson’s confession, he is more interested in killing Kit (with his permission, of course); all in the name of alien research. Kit actually agrees to this (what has he got to lose after all; everyone he loves is dead). Dr. Arden is convinced that Kit is special to the aliens and they will not let him die. But more on that later…
Lana is back on the war path and determined to kill Dr. Thredson once and for all (how hard is it to kill the baddie in a horror flick anyway?). She takes her trusty coat hanger and heads on down to where she had securely tied up Dr. Bloody Face. Wow – he’s not there! Did anyone else NOT guess that before it happened?! Biggest anti-climax of the season – right up there with Carol’s not dead in AMC’s The Walking Dead! So Sister Mary Eunice finds Lana instead and announces that not only did the coat hanger abortion not work, but that Lana is carrying a baby boy.
So we wind up this episode with the discovery that while Killer Santa strung up the Monsignor, he isn’t actually dead. The Angel of Death (Frances Conroy) is there to comfort him though…
And then, finally, we discover the fate of Dr. Arden’s attempt to bring back the aliens. It works…and fuck me – finally – it’s Pepper!
